The alkaline earth metals are a group of chemical elements in the periodic table with very similar properties. They are characterized by having two electrons outside an inert, noble-gas core: [NG] ns2. Those two loosely-bound electrons define the chemistry of the alkaline earths. They are all shiny, silvery-white, reactive metals at standard temperature and pressure and readily lose their two outermost electrons to form cations with charge 2+ and an oxidation state, or oxidation number of +2. In the modern IUPAC nomenclature, the alkaline earth metals comprise the group 2 elements.

The alkaline earth metals are beryllium (Be), magnesium (Mg), calcium (Ca), strontium (Sr), barium (Ba), and radium (Ra). This group lies in the s-block of the periodic table. All except Ra are quite common both in the earth and the wider universe. Earth's mantle, in fact, is largely formed of minerals that are complexes of MgO and SiO2. This is likely to be true of all terrestrial planets and of the cores of giant planets too small to have degenerate cores.

All the discovered alkaline earth metals occur in nature. Experiments are underway to attempt the synthesis of element 120, which is thought to be the next alkaline-earth metal. Ubn itself probably has the highest Z for any element which can be called an "alkaline-earth" metal. Beyond Period 8, differ-ences in properties between groups will become small. The characteristic chemistry of Group 2 metals will probably disappear, into a continuous smear of active metals whose properties don't change much from element to element.
