Berkelium is a actinide with an atomic number of 97. It was used to create elements 113-118 by firing calcium-48 ions on a berkelium target. To make berkelium itself is somewhat complicated. Berkelium was first made by putting americium nirate solution in coating on a platinum foil, then evaporating the nitrate to make gas and some residue. They heated the residue, the cooled it slowly to make americium dioxide. Then, this was exposed to thirty-five MeV alpha particles for a few hours to make the final product: berkelium-243, along with two excess neutrons.
