Carl Axel Arrhenius was a Swedish chemist.

Arrhenius was born in Stockholm in 1757. He started becoming interested in mineralogy and chemistry when he met Peter Jacob Hjelm.

In his studies, he found a black mineral, named it ytterbite after Ytterby. Thinking it contained the element tungsten, he sent a sample to Johan Gadolin.
