Selenium is a chemical element with symbol Se and atomic number 34. It is a Group 16 element with properties between those of its homologs sulfur and tellurium. It rarely occurs in its elemental state in nature, or as pure ore compounds. Selenium (Greek σελήνη selene meaning "Moon") was discovered in 1817 by Jöns Jacob Berzelius, who noted the similarity of the new element to the previously known tellurium (named for the Earth).
Although classified as a nonmetal, selenium does conduct electricity if exposed to light. In darkness, the material is, effectively, an insulator. As light intensity rises, its conductivity (1/resistivity) rises proportionally. This effect quickly led to the use of selenium in light meters. A related application later made use of selenium's ability to hold a charge as long as it is in darkness. If a selenium surface is charged, then part of it is exposed to light, the illuminated portions of the plate will discharge, while the dark portions remain charged. If the plate is then exposed to dust, it will be attracted to the charged areas, but not to the uncharged ones. This dust (toner) can then be transferred from plate to paper by pressing the two together. An image of the original pattern will then remain on the paper. This technique is called xerography, and has proven to be of some importance. Selenium is no longer used for xerography, but it was the material of choice until the 1970s.
