Elements in Groups 3 through 12 are considered transition metals. Chemistry of these elements is characterized by their having ns and (n-1)d, but no np, electrons involved in bonding.

Group 3 is problematic. Sc and Y clearly belong in Group 3, but the group explodes to include 15 elements in Periods 6 (lanthanides) and 7 (actinides). While it was quickly realized that the easiest way to cope with this was to assign one element in each series to Group 3 and to place the remainder as outside the grouping system. That left the question of whether the lanthanide and actinide series should be placed between Groups 2 and 3 or between Groups 3 and 4. The question has not been settled. Wikipedia originally placed La and Ac in Group 3 and the remainder of those series between groups. It has recently changed its position and now assigns the elements Lu and Lr to Group 3, with the other lanthanides and actinides between Groups 2 and 3. Ultimately, it comes down to a question of whether transition metals have an empty (n-2)f subshell or a filled one.

Most metals, in an engineering sense of the term, are transition metal alloys, particularly Fe- based or Ni-based.

Transition metals range from from relatively active (Group 3) to quite inert (Group 11). Group 12 elements are somewhat more reactive than Group 11.
